China's Monster Three Gorges Dam Is About To Slow The Rotation Of The Earth

16:37
The Myth: The filling of the reservoir behind Three Gorges Dam in China changed the rotation of the Earth.

The Evidence: Three Gorges Dam, China crosses the Yangtze River in Hubei province, China. It the world’s largest hydroelectric power station by total capacity, which will be 22,500 MW when completed. When the water level is maximum at 175 meters (574 ft) over sea level (91 meters (299 ft) above river level), the reservoir created by the dam is about 660 kilometers (410 mi) in length and 1.12 kilometers (0.70 mi) in width on average. The total surface area of the reservoir is 1045 square kilometers, and it will will flood a total area of 632 square kilometers, of land.  The reservoir will contain about 39.3 cu km (9.43 cubic miles) of water. That water will weigh more than 39 trillion kilograms (42 billion tons).
A shift in a mass of that size would affect the rotation of the Earth due to a phenomena known as the moment of inertia, which is the inertia of a rigid rotating body with respect to its rotation. The moment of inertia of an object about a given axis describes how difficult it is to change its angular motion about that axis. The longer the distance of a mass to its axis of rotation, the slower it will spin. You may not know it, but you see examples of this in everyday life.  For example, a figure skater attempting to spin faster will draw her arms tight to her bodies, and thereby reduce her moment of inertia. Similarly, a diver attempting to somersault faster will bring his body into a tucked position.
Raising 39 trillion kilograms of water 175 meters above sea level will increase the Earth’s moment of inertia and thus slow its rotation. However, the effect would extremely small.  NASA scientists calculated that shift of such as mass would increase the length of day by only 0.06 microseconds and make the Earth only very slightly more round in the middle and flat on the top. It would shift the pole position by about two centimeters (0.8 inch). Note that a shift in any object’s mass on the Earth relative to its axis of rotation will change its moment of inertia, although most shifts are too small to be measured (but they can be calculated).

Ransomware attack: India issues red alert, experts warn of more trouble today

14:41
The virus may be back today as offices log back in after the weekend. Security experts warn that attackers can easily modify the malware, making it tougher to shut down.

The country’s cyber security agency Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) has issued a red-coloured ‘critical alert’ in connection with the WannaCry attack, and warned users to not pay the ransom.
The ransomware worm that stopped car factories, hospitals, shops and schools over the weekend worldwide, with Asia having escaped the worst so far, could wreak fresh havoc on Monday when employees log back on, cyber security experts warned.
“Individuals or organisations are not encouraged to pay the ransom as this does not guarantee files will be released. Report such instances of fraud to CERT-In and law enforcement agencies,” CERT-In said.
The spread of the virus WannaCry, which locked up more than 100,000 computers, had slowed on Sunday, but new versions of the worm were expected even while the world was yet to take stock of the extent of damage from Friday’s attack.
Marin Ivezic, cyber security partner at PwC, said some clients had been “working around the clock since the story broke” to restore systems and install software updates or restore systems from back-ups.
Microsoft released patches last month and on Friday to fix a vulnerability that allowed the worm to spread across networks.
Code for exploiting that bug, known as “Eternal Blue”, was released on the internet in March by a hacking group known as the Shadow Brokers.
The group claimed it was stolen from a repository of National Security Agency hacking tools. The agency has not responded to requests for comment.
The US cyber security researcher who helped halt the WannaCry attack, Darien Huss, said on Sunday that it wouldn’t be difficult for those responsible to re-release it or for others to mimic it — and this time it would not be reined in.
“This particular attack was relatively easy to shut down,” agreed Bryce Boland, Asia Pacific chief technology officer for FireEye, a cyber security firm.
Monday is expected to be a busy day, especially in Asia which may not have seen the worst of the impact yet, as companies and organisations turn on their computers.
Some of the world’s largest institutions and government agencies have been affected so far, including the Russian interior ministry, FedEx in the US and Britain’s National Health Service.
Other major hits included automaker Renault and its arm Dacia, the Nissan plant in northeast England, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn, Spain’s telecom giant Telefonica, Portugal Telecom and Telefonica Argentina, and a hospital in Jakarta that cautioned of big queues on Monday when about 500 people were due to register.
Cyber security company Symantec predicted infections so far would cost tens of millions of dollars, mostly from cleaning corporate networks.
Ransoms paid amount to tens of thousands of dollars, one analyst said, but it is generally predicted to surge when the deadline to pay the ransom approaches, and people start paying up once news spreads that payment solves the problem. One estimate put it as high as a billion dollars, but till Saturday, some $33,000 had been paid into the several bitcoin accounts associated with the ransomware, according to Elliptic, a company that tracks online financial transactions involving virtual currencies
The US government on Saturday issued a technical alert with advice on how to protect against the attacks, asking victims to report attacks to the Federal Bureau of Investigation or Department of Homeland Security.

Hyderabad: The archaeology department of Telangana has discovered the world's largest capstone after excavating an ancient human burial site in Siddipet district, department officials said.

"The ancient human burial site excavated by Telangana Archaeology in Narmeta village in Nangunuru mandal has led to a stunning discovery of the world's largest capstone," said D Ramulu Naik, assistant director, Archaeology Department.

The efforts to lift this massive capstone was coordinated by S S Rangacharyulu, archaeology consultant and K Padmanabha, assistant director (museums), as this mission requires great precision and caution, Department officials said.A large crane lifted the huge capstone at the excavation site in Narmeta village on March 21, department officials said.

"The capstone of the menhir burial reportedly weighs about 40 tonnes," they added. The archaeology department is all set to undertake DNA testing of various artefacts that have been discovered at this site which will help in tracing the lineage of pre-historic humans, their food habits, lifestyle, and how their population later became extinct, the officials said.

Last year, team of experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) discovered a signet made of clay with ornamental design was among the about 3,000 ancient artefacts at the Keezhadi Pallai Sandhaipudur village in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu during an excavation.

Government planning to re-introduce Rs 1,000 note. Is this the new look?

12:45
Barely three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation move banning the circulation of Rs 1,000 note, the government is planning to bring back note of similar denomination in a new avatar soon. On November 8, 2016, PM Modi had announced withdrawal of old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes from circulation with immediate effect.
Reports suggest that printing of new Rs 1,000 note has already begun and it may be introduced soon. According to Indian Express , the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had planned to launch the new note in January but it was delayed as the central bank was pre-occupied with pressing need to supply Rs 500 notes.

A sample of the new Rs 1,000 is being circulated on social media, however, we can not confirm whether the yet-to-be launched note is similar to photos of which have gone viral. The violet coloured note bears of lot of resemblance with the new Rs 2,000 note. Interestingly, images of new Rs 2,000 note were also leaked on social media prior to its launch.

By the look of it, the new note will have the security features seen in the Rs 2,000 notes. However, with the counterfeiters managing to copy 11 out of the 17 security features of the new Rs 2,000, the RBI certainly needs to do more.

Pakistan-based counterfeiters have copied the geometric patterns and the colour scheme both on obverse and the reverse side including watermark, and the exclusive number pattern of the Rs 2,000 currency.

In genuine currency, there are 13 features on the front side including two for visually impaired and four on the reverse.

Meanwhile, CPI(M general secretary Sitaram Yechury has reacted sharply to reports of re-introduction of Rs 1,000 note and slammed PM Modi for his abrupt move to ban circulation of old Rs 500, 1,000 notes.
"Rs 1,000 notes set to be back? So what was this demonetisation about, destroying lives, livelihoods and crashing our Economy?" Yechury said in his tweet with hashtag - Jumlanomics.
